Cristine Reyes celebrates Boracay re-opening with daughter Amarah

Dirty, loud, and polluted. These are just some of the words that were used to describe the state of Boracay island over six months ago. The world-famous white sand beach was on the brink of getting alarmingly trashed when the Philippine government decided that it was time to close it down in order to save it before it could get any worse.

With the help of both national and local government bodies such as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Department of Tourism (DOT), the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), along with the local government of Aklan, the whole Boracay island was revamped. And after over six months of rehabilitating the world-famous island, it is now open again for business.

“I would like to acknowledge and thank our stakeholders for their patience and support and cooperation during the six-month rehabilitation, for our accredited [redacted] and those working hard to be one-hundred percent compliant with the DENR, DOT and DILG. Thank you for your efforts,” said Secretary Romulo-Puyat of DOT.

“It is the key to the preservation of this national treasure. The Boracay experience is the ultimate lesson in balancing development and protecting the environment. The lessons learned here are not for Boracay alone but also for the other island destinations around our beautiful country,” Secretary Romulo-Puyat added.

The island will strictly accept a certain number of tourists per day to ensure that the island is kept clean and orderly; and many tourists and celebrities from all over the country – and from the world – came together during its official opening day last October 26, 2018 to be part of the first few groups to experience the new and improved island of Boracay.

Some of these include actresses such as Coleen Garcia, Rufa Mae Quinto, Rafael Rossel, Eric Santos, a few Miss Earth candidates, and Christine Reyes along with her daughter, Amarah.
