Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or PhilHealth is the universal health insurance coverage in the country. This along with the Social Security System (SSS) and PAG-IBIG, requires all employed citizens under the age of 60 to contribute to it from their monthly salary. However, the law does not require people who earn only 1,000 pesos below to contribute. Recently, Neri Miranda learned the impact of being a member of PhilHealth and Senior Citizenship.
Neri recently rushed her 70-year-old mother to the hospital. On Instagram, she shared a photo of their bill with the original, deducted, and actual amount they had to pay after her mom was confined for four days.

On her post, she said:
“Super laking tulong ang Philhealth at syempre Senior Citizen! Naconfine kase Mommy ko. From 79k plus ang bill namin, naging 49k plus na lang! Laking ginhawa!”
Furthermore, she emphasized that this could prove why PhilHealth, SSS, and insurance is very important. She encourages everyone to process theirs in order to start saving for it. She says that it will become a really big help when necessary.
These government-controlled offices are made for the citizens to benefit from. It may not seem like that at first, but its purpose is to help you in the future when you’ll need it most.
For employees, it may seem like a burden, to have a decrease in your monthly salary just to contribute to these mandated benefits. But this actually saves you from worrying about medical bills and your retirement plan. This way, you can save up for things you want while the government helps you save up for the things you need.

In conclusion, we should appreciate these benefits even if we are unable to claim it. It is important to acknowledge that all of this is for future emergency use. Not having to use your PhilHealth benefits is not at all a bad thing because like what Neri said, it only means you’re healthy.
